Statement from the WOMAD Team:
Dear friends of WOMAD,
At WOMAD we have been overwhelmed by the messages of support and love that we have received since the Coronavirus entered our lives to devastating effect. Thank you.
We are all experiencing extraordinary and worrying times, for our families, our friends and our communities. There is uncertainty in all walks of life but if there’s a message from this pandemic it’s that we are all in the same situation, that we must pull together and show respect to each other more than ever; something that’s at the heart of the WOMAD ethos.
Nothing matters more than our responsibility to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of the WOMAD community and through that the wider community in which we live. We must support our emergency services, our neighbours and do all that we can to prevent the spread of this virus.
We are also critically aware that our festival is an important part of the lives of our artists, our crew and contractors who earn a living in an industry that has been among the first to be hit, hit harder than many others, with livelihoods being lost overnight all over the world and with no sign of recovery in the short term. The economic impact of our festivals in the communities where they take place is also significant and important to local and regional businesses.
So, whilst WOMAD is a bit part player in a global crisis we take our responsibilities to our whole community very seriously and have taken our time to consult, to learn and to make the right decision based on the information available.
Following a meeting with the Licensing authority, the combined emergency services and taking fully into account the government advice on halting the spread of the virus, it is clear, that in order to meet our goal of protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of the whole community there is no way we can go ahead with WOMAD 2020.
We are devastated but confident that this is the right and responsible decision and that we have to play our part in helping the country stay safe and to recover.
WOMAD is fortunate that we have already completed 3 festivals this year around the world and it seems our future is secure. We are already planning for WOMAD 2021 and talking to this years’ artists about next year – we all need something to look forward to!
To those of you who have already bought tickets there are two options. You can either hold onto your purchase and we will issue you a new ticket for 2021 very soon or, you can claim a full refund. The same applies to tickets being bought in instalments. You can either pause payments and pick them up again next year for WOMAD 2021 or claim a refund of the face value of your ticket. Details of how to do this are below.
We hope to see you all next year, we will definitely be in Charlton Park with our doors open but until then, take care, look after each other and keep following the various WOMAD social media feeds for information and also tasty WOMAD festival snacks to keep you going!

Quest’anno la line up vede, tra i primi artisti annunciati Angelique Kidjo , The Flaming Lips , Kate Tempest , Mariza e il headliner di giovedì Fatoumata Diawara, insieme a una serie di incredibili musicisti provenienti da tutto il mondo, per un weekend di scoperta musicale, danza , parola parlata, cibo, scienza e altro ancora.
Fresco della sua vittoria ai Grammys del mese scorso, la leggendaria Angelique Kidjo fa un ritorno trionfale a Charlton Park con la sua voce sorprendente, i ritmi elettrizzanti e la fusione delle tradizioni dell’Africa occidentale con R&B, funk e jazz.
La cantautrice maliana e la candidata ai Grammy Fatoumata Diawara, stile distintivo e potente, daranno il via al festival giovedì notte, portando il loro marchio di musica maliana, melodie e testi memorabili.
Kate Tempest fa il suo debutto con il WOMAD con la sua diagnosi creativa del condizione urbana del 21° secolo.
L’iconica rock band d’avanguardia The Flaming Lips porta per la prima volta il suo frenetico labirinto di inni psichedelici su WOMAD. I tre volte vincitori del Grammy Award sono attesissimi con le loro esibizioni esagerate ed energiche.
Ci sarà la regina del fado portoghese e superstar a tutto tondo Mariza, celebrata per i suoni emozionanti che toglieranno il respiro al pubblico.
Il gruppo Ska bicolore The Selecter sarà sul palco giovedì 23 luglio. Conosciuta come una delle band chiave nel revival Ska britannico della fine degli anni ’70 e primi anni ’80 e uno dei pochi show razzialmente e sessualmente integrati sulla scena, che affrontano il sessismo e il razzismo.
Il gruppo haitiano RAM mostrerà il suo esuberante e gioioso rasin mizik – un mix di musica percussiva Vodou, rock e funk che crea una gloriosa narrazione musicale.
Il supergruppo di sole donne dell’Africa occidentale Les Amazones d’Afrique fa seguito all’eccezionale concerto ai Real World Studios di gennaio. Il gruppo è una forza creativa le cui vibranti armonie sono un appello per le donne del mondo a unirsi e insorgere contro il patriarcato.
Per la prima volta al WOMAD, Fantastic Negrito, la cui storia sembra un film: stava andando a un appuntamento per firmare un contratto discografico, quando ha fatto terribile incidente d’auto che gli ha causato la rottura di tutti gli arti e lo ha lasciato in coma. Oggi è un vortice solista che mescola anima, blues e R&B per raccontare la sua storia attraverso la sua musica.
Dall’altra parte dello spettro musicale arriva una delle più grandi esportazioni musicali islandesi, il folk-pop indie di Ásgeir.
Atteso il ritorno di A Certain Ratio, la cui ultima apparizione sul palco di un WOMAD è stata 35 anni fa.
Ci saranno anche i SEED Ensemble con il loro sound tra il jazz e i groove influenzati da Londra, Africa occidentale e Caraibi. Il progetto presenta una line-up stellare con alcuni dei giovani musicisti jazz più emergenti di Londra tra cui, alla tuba, Theon Cross e il sassofonista tenore Chelsea Carmichael.
Sahra Halgan è una delle cantanti più importanti dello stato indipendente autoproclamato del Somaliland, con la sua voce calda che mescola le lotte proprie e quelle dei suoi connazionali, mentre Elaha Soroor, che si esibirà con Kefaya, è dovuta fuggire dal nativo Afghanistan dopo aver preso posizione contro il governo.
Non c’è solo musica a WOMAD; c’è davvero qualcosa per tutti, grandi e bambini.
