The first ever live performance of the solo music of Anthony Phillips and Mike Rutherford composed in the 1970s, will be performed live on the Trading Boundaries stage.

The evenings, endorsed by both Anthony Phillips and Mike Rutherford, has Rocking Horse Music Club from the USA returning to Trading Boundaries to showcase the music of Anthony Phillips with additional songs from Mike Rutherford’s first solo album ‘Smallcreep’s Day’ with Noel McCalla, who provided original vocals on the album, joining them on stage.

Working directly with Anthony Phillips, Rocking Horse Music Club has lovingly curated a selection of songs primarily from his first three solo albums, The Geese & the Ghost, Wise After the Event, and Sides.

This will be the first time this music will be performed live by a full band – LAST TICKETS

Rocking Horse Music Club includes Coombes (keyboards/vocals), Eric Wagley (drums), Brenden Harisiades (bass), Myron Kibbee (guitars), Mike McAdam (guitars), Patrik Gochez (vocals/piano/guitar), and Justin Cohn (vocals/guitar).

Coombes and his team have worked with world class artists including Anthony Phillips (Genesis), Ian McDonald (King Crimson), Chris Difford (Squeeze), Vernon Reid (Living Colour), Greg Hawkes (the Cars), Kenwood Dennard (Brand X), Garth Hudson (the Band), Dave Mattacks (Fairport Convention), Nick Magnus (Steve Hackett), Jonathan Mover (GTR), Dale Newman (Genesis associate), Kate St John (Dream Academy), and many others.

Rocking Horse Music Club has recently received two Best Song nominations from the Independent Music Awards for its song, Everywhere is Home, which features London’s Sing Gospel choir. The song has received airplay on BBC Radio 2 and London Live, as well as regional BBC and independent radio in the UK. The band toured the UK in support of its debut album in September 2018, including an appearance on BBC Radio Kent and a well-received performance here at Trading Boundaries.

From his days as a 15 year old playing support to The Shadows at a pub gig to appearing as lead singer with headliners on most of Europe’s biggest stages with Mezzoforte and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Noel McCalla has consistently stood out from the crowd.

As singer with Sniff’n the Tears, Moon and McCalla and a long association with the brilliant Morrisey/Mullen Band, and was vocalist on Mike Rutherford’s Smallcreep’s Day – he was considered as the replacement for Genesis singer and frontman Peter Gabriel after he left the group in 1975.

Noel has deservedly earned acclaim as “One of Britain’s best Soul Singers” (Blues and Soul magazine) while his appearances as vocalist with “Some Kinda Wonderful” show jointly led by award winning saxophonist Derek Nash, have highlighted his all-round abilities and accomplishments as a lead vocalist – “a confident, graceful and dynamic singer” (Independent on Sunday).

‘Pennsylvania Flickhouse’, written by Anthony Phillips, is the only recording and the only original song the band ever made.

“After the tragic and untimely death of Rivers Job in 1979, the passing of Mike Colman now leaves only four of the six full Anon members alive. He was undoubtedly the most prodigiously gifted of us all – a music scholar, highly adept at both piano and violin, he just sort of took up the guitar and played it without any seeming effort!

Thankfully at this stage known as Mick (hence avoiding any confusion with Mike Rutherford, the man he briefly replaced!), he fitted in very quickly and contributed some wonderful touches to the group – in particular his magnificent tremolo-wielding solo on the outro of the sadly-lost Brian Roberts recording of ”Pennsylvania Flickhouse” (immeasurably better than the weak, feeble, anodyne version recorded at a ‘proper’ studio sometime later).

We became good friends, both sitting at the back in the ‘jokers’ class of chemistry & maths (inveterately useless at both) with maverick characters such as the legendary Philip Darwall Smith who was brazen and bold enough to go up to the b.odourly-challenged master, Mr X, spray him with Right Guard and get away with it!”

Richar Macphail era nato il 17 settembre 1950. Aveva festeggiato i 70 anni con l’uscita del suo libro nella versione italiana. L’ex tour manager dei Genesis ne aveva parlato in Italia. Un omaggio di Horizons Genesis e il ricordo degli ex Genesis.

Si intitola “La mia vita con i Genesis – COMPRALO QUI“, la versione italiana del libro di Richard Macphail, l’ex road manager del periodo che va dal 1969 al 1973, dei primi giorni della band e delle sessioni per la registrazione dell’album Trespass, che prese vita proprio nel leggendario Cottage di proprietà dei suoi genitori.

Figura sempre più importante all’interno dei Genesis, fino al clamoroso addio dopo Foxtrot. Ufficialmente per occuparsi d’altro, ma pare che fosse sempre più in difficoltà di fronte agli appetiti del music business nei confronti della band.

Un ultimo e caldo saluto lo si può trovare nel retro di copertina dell’album Genesis Live, tanto da mettere in allarme i fan e far loro temere la morte di Richard. Il quale allora era invece vivo, ed è rimasto sempre in contatto con Genesis & Co. e partecipava spesso ai Genesis Day in tutto il mondo, Italia compresa.

Già in “My Book Of Genesis – COMPRALO QUI“ la prefazione di Peter Gabriel dimostrava gli ottimi rapporti di Macphail con gli ex compagni d’avventura.

Il libro era scritto con Chris Charlesworth e dà ai lettori un quadro nella vita della band di quel periodo, vista dalla sua angolazione. Oltre a Gabriel ci sono interventi degli altri membri della band e ancora più foto e un capitolo inedito rispetto alla versione inglese.

Ecco come lo hanno omaggiato sui social Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks e Steve Hackett:

Ricorda Peter:

“Abbiamo avuto sessant’anni di storia insieme, da quando eravamo a scuola e lui era il cantante figo della band chiamata Anon a quando gli ho parlato la scorsa settimana dopo che aveva avuto una brutta caduta.
Rich è stato la persona che più volte ci ha tirato fuori dalle situazioni difficili. Quando non potevamo permetterci una sala prove ha convinto i suoi genitori a lasciarci il cottage di famiglia ad Abinger Hammer per un anno e quando non potevamo permetterci un furgone ha convinto suo padre a lasciarci un vecchio furgone per il pane Hovis che abbiamo portato in giro per il paese. Quando alcuni membri del gruppo avevano dubbi sul nostro futuro, lui ci ispirava tutti e ci convinceva a continuare.
Da amico e campione è diventato il tour manager dei Genesis e poi il mio stesso tour manager quando ho ricominciato a lavorare. La sua determinazione, il suo buon umore e il suo entusiasmo ci hanno fatto superare tanti momenti difficili.”

Ricorda Tony:

“I Genesis gli devono molto, è stato una parte cruciale di quei primi anni, e senza il suo sostegno e incoraggiamento la band avrebbe faticato a sopravvivere. Ma soprattutto, per oltre cinquant’anni, è stato un amico meraviglioso, gentile e leale, le nostre famiglie hanno condiviso tanti momenti felici insieme. Ricorderemo per sempre la sua personalità e il suo incontrollabile entusiasmo, nessuno poteva gridare o applaudire più forte di Rich quando la situazione lo richiedeva.
Ha chiamato solo la settimana scorsa ed è incredibile pensare che sia l’ultima volta che lo abbiamo sentito.
Mancherà molto a tutti noi.”

Ricorda Steve:

“È stata una delle persone più speciali che abbia mai conosciuto… Incredibilmente gentile con me nei primi giorni di Genesis, mi ha aiutato ad acquisire fiducia. Aveva un cuore grande. Ha iniziato occupandosi di una band e in seguito ha mostrato la sua compassione per il mondo intero, creando aziende che si prendevano cura sia delle persone che dell’ambiente. Era un amico meraviglioso per tutti i membri dei Genesis e tirava fuori il meglio da tutti noi. Era il calore personificato.
È rimasto un caro amico nel corso degli anni ed è sempre stata una grande gioia vederlo.”

La serie di concerti ha toccato la Russia, l’Ungheria, la Bulgaria e la Serbia in ordine cronologico.

Lo spettacolo comprendeva i classici di Djabe, le composizioni di Steve Hackett (The Steppes, Last Train To Istanbul, Ace Of Wands, ecc.) e brani strumentali dei Genesis (Horizons, Firth Of Fifth, In That Quiet Earth, Los Endos).

Una delle registrazioni più emozionanti dell’album è la canzone “Last Train to Istanbul” di Steve Hackett, “Out of the Tunnel’s Mouth”, mai eseguita dal vivo, neanche con la sua stessa band.
